If you have ever taken a foreign language class in high school, you know that it is possible to be great on paper, but struggle when you have to actually speak the language. With our English students, the goal is not just to know grammar and do well on tests, but to be able to fully speak and understand the language. So to practice that aspect of it, all the English students took a little field trip to Antigua, Guatemala.

If you are not familiar with Antigua, it is a very touristy town in Guatemala. People come from all around the world to witness the history, architecture, and culture that it has to offer. With that being said, it is the perfect place to practice English skills. The students were tasked with speaking English to tourists from the States and other English speaking countries so they could work on their speaking and comprehension. It was a great way to help them get out of their shells and practice.

In addition to that, the students also had to visit different locations and act as a tour guide in English to their fellow classmates and their teachers. They went to different ruins, the cross overlooking the town, and the park. They explained things about each location as if it was their job. This was a fun activity because being a tour guide is actually a common job in Antigua and the students imagined how it would feel to graduate and move on to a profession like that.

Every day, the English students are becoming more and more fluent. They work hard because they know that this will help them achieve big things in the future. As they imagine their dream jobs after graduation, they know the more they work hard now, the more it will pay off later.
