September Celebrations

September is a very special month in Guatemala. In September, Guatemala celebrates their Independence Day and it is always a grand occasion.

A week before Independence Day, Love Guatemala hosts a big event where all the students are invited and each class participates. Each class has a girl representing them in a pageant type contest. The classes start with a dance from a certain region of Guatemala. After that the girls each give a presentation about the regions. Finally, each girl presents a talent and answers questions about Guatemala. Each category highlights Guatemala and allows the students to have fun in a competition.

In addition to the competition, the event was filled with the word of God. It is always such a blessing to be able to share with the students and continue to pour God’s love into their lives. Even though the competition is fun and entertaining for the students, we know that the main goal is to always bring everything back to the Lord!

Another fun thing that Love Guatemala does is run a torch from one town back to the building. A couple days before Independence Day, the Love Guatemala staff travels to Santo Tomas, the town next to Magdalena. There, they receive a torch that they have to keep lit. The running of the torch represents the messenger sharing the news throughout the country when Guatemala achieved independence. It is a beloved tradition and the staff love to experience it together. They are able to bond as they run and cheer in the streets making their way back to the Love Guatemala building. When they returned, they were met with some traditional Guatemalan treats and games. It was a wonderful time!

Guatemalans are very proud of their heritage and it is a great joy to be able to celebrate independence. It is a blessing that Love Guatemala is able to host events that highlight this special day and we are excited to continue celebrating for years to come!
